SHREVEPORT, La. - A free developmental screening program at LSU Shreveport has drawn nearly 300 families this summer, far exceeding expectations and underscoring what educators say is a growing need for mental health and learning support in young children. The program, designed to identify speech delays, behavioral issues, and other developmental concerns, was originally planned for a smaller group. Organizers say the overwhelming response reveals a hidden crisis: parents are struggling to find affordable evaluations for their children, and public schools lack the staff to provide them.
Louisiana currently faces a severe shortage of school psychologists. According to state education data, the ratio of psychologists to students is well below national recommendations. Many districts have only one psychologist covering multiple schools, forcing long wait times for evaluations. Without these assessments, children cannot qualify for special education services or classroom accommodations.
The LSU Shreveport screenings are meant to catch problems early, when intervention is most effective. But the high turnout suggests that many families have been waiting months or even years for help. Educators warn that without more funding for school psychology positions, the gap between demand and available services will continue to widen, leaving vulnerable children without the support they need to succeed in the classroom.
