Montgomery College Launches New Psychology Program

Montgomery College has introduced a new Psychology Option inside its Associate of Arts in General Studies degree, giving students a clearer route toward transferring to a four-year university. The new track is designed for those who want to explore human behavior, mental processes, and social interaction while completing their first two years of college at a lower cost.

The curriculum covers core areas such as developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, and research methods. Students will also take general education courses that align with common lower-division requirements at Maryland's public universities, including the University of Maryland and Towson University. This alignment is meant to reduce the friction students often face when credits do not transfer cleanly.

Faculty members say the option is not just for future therapists or counselors. It also suits students considering careers in education, human resources, social work, marketing, or criminal justice, where understanding people is central. The program includes advising support to help students pick electives that match their intended major at their target transfer school.

The college expects the first cohort to enroll in the fall semester. Current students can switch into the option by meeting with an academic advisor. The move is part of a broader effort at the college to create more structured pathways for students who want a clear plan but are not ready to commit to a highly specialized associate degree.
