Psychologists say patients are turning to chatbots as mental health professionals

Psychologists say patients are turning to chatbots as mental health professionals

More than three-quarters of psychologists say their patients are now bringing artificial intelligence into the therapy room. According to a recent survey, clients are openly discussing their use of chatbots to manage mental health, seek second opinions, or even self-diagnose conditions before or during treatment.

The trend reflects a growing comfort with AI as a supplementary tool, but it also raises concerns among professionals. Many psychologists note that while chatbots can offer immediate responses and reduce stigma around seeking help, they lack the nuanced understanding of human emotion and context that therapy requires. Patients may rely on these tools for crisis support or symptom checking, sometimes without realizing the limitations of algorithmic advice.

Some therapists report that clients use AI to prepare for sessions, practicing conversations or identifying patterns in their thoughts. Others say patients come in with a list of symptoms they have already run through a chatbot, hoping for a quicker diagnosis. This shift is prompting mental health experts to adapt their practices, integrating discussions about technology use into treatment plans.

The survey highlights a broader cultural change: people are increasingly turning to digital tools for emotional support, blurring the line between professional care and automated assistance. Psychologists emphasize that while AI can be a helpful starting point, it should not replace human judgment or the therapeutic relationship. As one expert put it, a chatbot can listen, but it cannot truly understand.
