The answer, it turned out, was yes. Aron's lab study produced a list of 36 questions that escalate in intimacy, moving from light topics like "Would you like to be famous?" to deeper territory such as "When did you last cry in front of another person?" The final step required participants to stare into each other's eyes for four minutes without speaking.

The results surprised even the researchers. Two strangers who worked through all 36 questions reported feeling closer than many people do with lifelong friends.
