Iran's negotiating team brought in mental health professionals to help craft communications with President Donald Trump during indirect talks aimed at ending hostilities, according to an Iranian official.
The official told Drop Site that two senior psychologists were added to the advisory circle for the negotiations. Their job was to assess Trump's mental state and help Iranian negotiators shape messages that were passed to the U.S. president through regional mediators.
"We added two senior psychologists to the negotiations' advisory circle so that we can shape messages intended for President Trump from the perspective of managing what we regard as psychopathic behavior pattern," the official said.
The psychologists started working with the Iranian team after the first round of bilateral talks in Islamabad in April. At that point, both sides were exchanging proposed terms for a potential Memorandum of Understanding.
The official noted that Trump's reactions improved noticeably once the team began using the psychologists' recommendations in their messages and written communications. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The official also said the negotiations were conducted with an eye on history. "Because the exchanged texts will ultimately become part of the historical record, we conduct our negotiations in a manner that ensures the relative weight and sophistication of each party's negotiating techniques will be evident should these communications be made public in the years ahead."
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that 22 medical specialists examined Trump during his latest checkup. That was nearly double the number of specialists who assessed him in past presidential checkups. The report said it was the most medical specialists to evaluate a president for a single visit.
On Sunday night, Trump and Iran announced they had reached a preliminary agreement for a Memorandum of Understanding. It is set to be signed in Geneva, Switzerland on June 19.
