A new study has linked certain traditional masculine attitudes to a greater likelihood of psychological distress in men. Researchers found that men who strongly endorse norms centered on power over women and a "playboy" lifestyle are significantly more prone to mental health issues. The findings suggest that rigid adherence to these specific ideals of masculinity may come at a cost to emotional well-being.
The study, which analyzed data from thousands of participants, focused on how men internalize societal expectations. Those who placed a high value on sexual conquest and control in relationships reported higher rates of depression, anxiety, and stress. The connection held even after accounting for other factors like age, income, and education.
Perhaps more troubling, the research also revealed a compounding problem. Men who held these views were less likely to seek professional help for their psychological struggles. This reluctance creates a cycle where the very attitudes that contribute to poor mental health also prevent men from addressing it. The authors suggest that challenging these narrow definitions of manhood could be a key step in improving mental health outcomes for men, encouraging them to see vulnerability not as a weakness but as a path to healthier coping.
